Frequently Asked Questions
What is Guy Talk?
Guy Talk Initiative is an adaptation of the #GlobalGuyTalk initiative. The concept behind Guy Talk Initiative is simple – gather a group of men and start conversations and think critically to enhance their roles in society. With the help of the resources available on this website, men can openly discuss and share perspectives on subjects that they feel are important but rarely get a chance to talk about, i.e., ego, love, friendship, fatherhood, etc.
Why do we need Guy Talk ?
Guy Talk Initiative is an opportunity for men to share experiences with each other and reach a deeper level of understanding of how norms and expectations often create an unhealthy, destructive environment that we are responsible for changing. Few men speak with each other about what it means to be a man: about societal expectations, requirements, and norms of how to be a ‘real man’. This non-communication often adds a lot of pressure. To provide for families, to be strong, to not show emotions, and to not let people see weaknesses. Traditional gender norms risk affecting our well-being and building up obstacles for how we can live our lives. It’s time for us as a group to challenge societal masculinity norms and take responsibility for our wellbeing, and make sure that it doesn’t become a problem for others. We cannot continue living in a world where men cannot be themselves or vulnerable with their children, friends and family. Guy Talk Initiative provides us men with increased access to a range of emotions, to stronger relationships with ourselves and others, and various ways of expressing masculinity. Let’s start talking!
How to host a Guy Talk ?
A Guy Talk Initiative session can be easily organized. All you have to do is gather around 5-8 men/friends at any suitable place where you can sit and talk. The purpose of Guy Talk Initiative is to provide opportunities for men to engage in thoughtful discussions and contribute to the betterment of society. Through this forum, men can openly discuss those underlying thoughts that are generally not considered suitable for regular conversation, allowing them to bring their perspectives into the public view. On this website, all resources, such as conversation guides and introductory videos, are freely available for anyone who wants to host or participate in a Guy Talk Initiative session. These resources can be used as a starting point for conversations. For more information on how to conduct a session you can refer to the user manual.
How to choose a subject or guide ?
That’s completely up to you. The different topics build on matters that Pakistani men have identified as things they rarely talk about but would want to talk about without outside judgment. If it’s the first time you host a Guy Talk Initiative, you might choose a conversation guide that feels easier and not as in-depth. Each guide is divided into different levels, for you to get an idea about which questions would be good to start with.
What should be the size of the group ?
Groups can consist of 5-8 people. The group can gather at a dhabba, at your College/University, or in your office space or anywhere where you can sit comfortably, sip on your chai and talk.
Can I arrange a virtual/digital Guy Talk ?
Yes, absolutely. Generally, it’s better for discussions to take place face-to-face. However, there are situations where we cannot gather in person. In such cases, an online #GuyTalkPakistan can be organized, and fortunately, its method is quite simple. It’s essential to consider ethical guidelines before starting the conversation. Here are some suggestions to make your digital #GuyTalkPakistan conversation successful: Firstly, choose a platform for your digital #GuyTalkPakistan meeting that is accessible to everyone, such as Zoom, Google Meet, Skype, etc. These platforms are often secure and offer free services. During the conversation, remember to maintain the confidentiality of what is being discussed. This principle applies both online and offline. Recording, taking screenshots, or documenting the conversation in any way is not allowed. Be aware of the platform you are using and understand how its functions operate to ensure you can monitor the session. For example, on many platforms, when someone is recording, a red icon appears. You can change your settings according to your needs to control this. Additionally, if someone wants to speak, they can request their turn through the chat box or raise their hand through the reaction bar. In a digital setup, interpreting facial expressions can be challenging. For the comfort and reassurance of everyone, it is recommended that each person keeps their camera on. Not only for seeing each other but also to ensure that everyone is participating.
